Dr. Alfonso Ferguson
BHC 40 Under 40 | Class of 2026 | From the Ground Up
Founder & Executive Director | GoodWerk Counseling and Consultation | Orlando, FL
Dr. Alfonso Ferguson is a counselor educator, clinician, and social justice advocate working to reimagine how mental health care is understood and delivered within marginalized communities.
Through GoodWerk Counseling, he is building a practice grounded in affirmation, cultural humility, and community-centered care.
The Journey
Dr. Ferguson’s work is rooted in both inheritance and observation.
"Healing, in many forms, has always been a part of my inheritance."
As a Jamaican immigrant, he grew up in a culture where mental health was often unspoken. Emotional struggles and trauma were present, but rarely named.
That gap shaped his purpose. He set out to become a bridge between lived experience and formal care, bringing language, understanding, and access to communities that had long gone without it.
What This Recognition Means
For Dr. Ferguson, this recognition represents a full-circle moment.
It reflects not only his work, but the generations of resilience and sacrifice that made his path possible. It also affirms that the work of pouring back into the African diaspora is both seen and valued.
What’s Next
He is focused on creating spaces that allow Black healthcare professionals to engage with their work more authentically.
Through training, supervision, and consultation, he is helping reframe professionalism in ways that are both liberatory and sustainable.
"Be honest with yourself about your capacity and your why."
Dr. Ferguson’s work challenges healthcare to expand its understanding of healing, centering identity, culture, and lived experience as essential components of care.
