Victor McKenzie, Jr.
BHC 40 Under 40 | Class of 2026 | From the Ground Up
CEO | Virginia Health Catalyst | Richmond, VA
Victor McKenzie Jr. is a public health and nonprofit leader focused on strengthening systems that improve health outcomes at the community level. As CEO of Virginia Health Catalyst, he leads work that connects advocacy, policy, and practical solutions to expand access and improve care across the state.
His leadership is grounded in partnership building and systems thinking, with a focus on ensuring that communities often left behind are not only included, but prioritized in how solutions are designed and implemented.
The Journey
McKenzie’s connection to healthcare began with a simple but lasting experience.
He spent time accompanying his grandmother to pick up her insulin, observing how something as routine as access to medication shaped daily life.
"Even as a child, those trips showed me how important consistent access to care and medication can be in someone's daily life."
That experience stayed with him and made healthcare personal long before it became professional. It shaped his commitment to building systems that work for the people who rely on them most.
What This Recognition Means
For McKenzie, this recognition reflects both the work itself and the purpose behind it.
Being recognized within a community that centers Black leadership in health equity is deeply meaningful. It affirms the direction of his work while also reinforcing a sense of responsibility. He sees it as a reminder that the work ahead matters just as much as what has already been done.
What’s Next
His focus is on building stronger systems and more connected communities through a whole-person approach to health.
That includes expanding partnerships, shaping policy, and advancing solutions that improve access and long-term outcomes across Virginia. He is also investing in building institutions and leadership pipelines that can sustain this work over time.
"Stay close to the people you hope to serve."
McKenzie’s work reflects a long-term vision of healthcare. Real change happens when systems are built with people at the center and designed to last beyond any one leader or moment.
