Alyssa Bedard, MPH

BHC 40 Under 40 | Class of 2026 | For the Culture

Founder, Doula & DEIJB Director | Breathing Through Life Doula Services | Tampa, FL

Alyssa Bedard is a public health advocate, doula, and systems thinker working to transform Black maternal health.

Her work spans community engagement, policy, and education, with a focus on ensuring that Black women and birthing people are not only cared for, but protected, respected, and centered in how care is designed.

The Journey

Her path into healthcare began with her own experience.

As a young mother, she navigated a birth that left her feeling unheard and unsupported.

"What I went through was not just about one moment..."

That experience became a catalyst. It revealed patterns that extended far beyond her individual story and pushed her to move from personal advocacy into systemic change.

Her work now bridges both worlds, from direct care to policy influence.

What This Recognition Means

For Bedard, this recognition reflects the movement she is part of.

It is rooted in advocacy, community, and a shared belief that Black women deserve safe and dignified care.

It also serves as a reminder to continue leading with intention and to stay grounded in the communities that shaped her work.

What’s Next

She is expanding her work into policy and board leadership, stepping into spaces where decisions are made and systems are shaped.

At the same time, she is growing her doula team to extend care on the ground.

"Find people who believe in you and lean in."

Bedard’s work reflects a bridge between lived experience and institutional change, ensuring that policy and practice move together.
