Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician | Children's National Hospital | Washington, DC
Dr. Chidimma Acholonu is a pediatric emergency medicine physician and public health advocate at Children's National Hospital in Washington, DC. She is also an active leader within the National Medical Association, where she supports Residents, Fellows, and Early Career Physicians.
Her work is grounded in a clear set of priorities. She is focused on building community, strengthening the physician pipeline, and advancing best practices in the care of children, particularly those from vulnerable and marginalized backgrounds.
The Journey
Dr. Acholonu’s journey into medicine was shaped by both purpose and foundation.
"The tenacity instilled in me by my parents, the discipline refined by my Igbo Nigerian upbringing, and the motivation fostered by mentors who have supported me laid the foundation for each step on this journey."
These influences created a throughline that continues to guide her work. Her approach to medicine is not only clinical, it is deeply rooted in community, identity, and responsibility.
What This Recognition Means
For Dr. Acholonu, this recognition affirms the purpose behind her work and the communities she serves.
As a Black woman in medicine, she notes that the recognition carries additional weight. There are spaces where showing up fully and authentically can be complex, where expectations are often unspoken but deeply felt. This recognition feels validating because it reinforces that excellence does not require compromise of identity.
She describes it as both a moment of gratitude and a source of momentum.
"I'm grateful, but I'm also energized. There is still so much more to do."
What’s Next
Dr. Acholonu is focused on building more intentional systems to support the next generation of Black physicians. She is also working to strengthen community within spaces like the National Medical Association.
In parallel, she is developing systems to support schools and school districts through policies and training that address urgent and emergent issues in the school environment.
"You, exactly as you are, deserve to be in this space and are needed in this space."
Dr. Acholonu’s work reflects a broader commitment. It is not only about care delivery, but about building systems and communities where the next generation can thrive.
