Nurse Practitioner, Obstetrics & Gynecology | MedStar Georgetown University Hospital | Washington, DC

Monica Elston Carter, known as Monica the NP, is an award-winning Family Nurse Practitioner specializing in OB-GYN at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. She is also an author, speaker, and educator who empowers women to confidently advocate for themselves.

Through The Compensation Course and her book Salary Queen, she has helped women secure more than seven million dollars in negotiated contracts while encouraging them to take ownership of their careers and health.

The Journey

Carter’s path into healthcare was driven by a desire to care for others in tangible ways and to advocate for those whose voices are often unheard.

Her experience working in an OB-GYN office during high school became a defining moment.

"I witnessed the importance of dignity, trust, and patient-centered care."

That experience shaped her commitment to building care environments that center all three.

What This Recognition Means

For Carter, the recognition feels full circle.

Having spoken at the BHC conference, she experienced the energy of the community firsthand. Being recognized by that same community now carries deep meaning. It affirms her work in women’s health and her broader mission of empowerment.

"To see it come to life is truly a dream come true."

What’s Next

Carter is building a patient-centered and women-centered care model that expands access to high-quality, compassionate care.

Her vision spans the full lifespan of women’s health, from menstruation to menopause, with a focus on care that is evidence-based, personalized, and grounded in dignity.

"Remember that you deserve to be in the room."

Carter’s work reflects a powerful combination of clinical care and empowerment, ensuring that women are not only treated, but equipped to advocate for themselves.
